Meet Our Principals

Randy Qual

Randy Qual,

Elementary Principal

Mora Elementary was selected as a 2023 National Distinguished Elementary School.  The first school in the state of Minnesota to receive this honor.  In 2019, it was designated a Minnesota School of Excellence.  We are proud of our student results.  We have a great staff and a great school setting on over 100 acres which we share with our high school.   We have amazing outdoor landscapes, athletic fields, and the Welia Center attached (fieldhouse and walking track).   It’s exciting to be a part of Mora Elementary!

Please don't hesitate to call or email me with any questions you may have regarding our schools or your child's education.  I'm proud of our schools, our staff, and our students.  Go MUSTANGS!

Personal Background: I enjoy going to sporting events, fishing, camping, traveling, playing cards, and spending time with my family. My wife and I raise our 3 children in the Mora School District.  I am a proud member of the Mora Lions and the Mustang Boosters Club, two groups that do extraordinary things for the town of Mora and its residents.  I enjoy watching all athletics but am the #1 fan of the Vikings! I'm looking forward to the year ahead as your Principal. GO MUSTANGS!

It is my great pleasure to serve Mora Elementary students, families, and staff for the 2023-24 school year. Our first priority every day is to ensure each student is safe and feels connected to our MES family. Our dedicated staff consistently enrich student lives and strive to ensure all students are engaged with their learning. At Mora Elementary School we ask our students to show their Mustang Pride with the three school rules: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Safe. Go Mustangs!

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time in regard to your child’s education. I look forward to meeting students and parents and working together to make this a great school year! You can contact me at 320-679-6203 or jfussy@moraschools.org

During my free time I have a deep passion for the outdoors. I enjoy enhancing my property to attract wildlife. When my work is complete, you can find me hunting just about anything, fishing the waters in northern Minnesota, or searching for beautiful Lake Superior agates. I have two children that serve our country in the MN Army National Guard. My son works full time in the military and my daughter is a freshman in college. I enjoy reading literature that focuses on women that have made an impact and have paved the way for other women. Their stories have inspired me to fulfill my passion in leadership. I enjoy time with family and friends, especially if it’s playing cards together! Last but not least, I truly enjoy finding student’s strengths and helping them find their way through their educational journeys.

“I’d learned the single most important principle of teaching: they don’t care how much you know unless they know how much you care."

MES Proficiency Data

We couldn’t be more proud of the results our students and staff received last spring on the state MCA tests and on our local FAST tests.  While you may hear about the state and many schools going down, that is not the case for Mora Elementary.  We grew significantly last year in reading, math, and science and returned to pre-pandemic MCA results.

For the complete results, please visit the Minnesota School Report Card.  Click on “My School” and then type Mora Elementary (or whichever school you are looking for) in the search bar where the magnifying glass is located.   We have a talented staff that has worked extremely hard to ensure your child receives the best education possible.  We have great students that have a strong desire to learn and a great community that prioritizes education.  #MustangPride!

ESEA Distinguished School Award

2023 National ESEA Distinguished School

Mora Elementary Recognized for Success in 2022

The National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators (NAESPA) is pleased to announce that Mora Elementary from Mora, Minnestoa has been named a National ESEA Distinguished School by the state education agency in Minnesota. MES is one of up to 100 schools throughout the country that is being nationally recognized for exceptional student achievement in 2022. A project of NAESPA, the National ESEA Distinguished Schools Program publicly recognizes qualifying federally funded schools for the outstanding academic achievements of their students. It highlights the efforts of schools across the country making significant improvements for their students. The program has been in place since 1996, showcasing the success of hundreds of schools in one of three categories:

CATEGORY 1: Exceptional student performance and academic growth, as determined by each state CATEGORY 2: Closing the achievement gap between student groups, as determined by each state CATEGORY 3: Excellence in serving special populations of students (e.g. homeless, migrant, English learners, etc.)

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) provides additional resources for vulnerable students and federal grants to state educational agencies to improve the quality of public elementary and secondary education.

The Association is a membership organization made up of State ESEA Program Administrators, and their staff from each of the states and territories, charged with managing their state federal education program. They ensure compliance with federal regulations, but more importantly work to see that all children — especially those living in economically disadvantaged conditions — have the opportunity to receive a high-quality education. NAESPA implements the National ESEA Distinguished Schools Program to highlight selected schools that have successfully used their ESEA federal funds to improve the education for all students–including economically disadvantaged students. More information about all National ESEA Distinguished Schools is available on the ESEA Network website: www.ESEAnetwork.org.
