Starting a Small Aquaponics System for Food

Join the Kanabec County Master Gardeners for a presentation by Marie Abbey, a master's student at the University of Minnesota working in the aquaponics research lab.

Aquaponic growing systems offer year-round growing of aquatic animals with plants. The systems provide nutrients to water-grown plants using the waste left behind by fish, in a process similar to the way wild fish supply nutrients to plants in an ecosystem.

Marie Abbey will describe a variety of aquaponic production methods. She will also share her research on the economics of starting an aquaponics system, including general start-up costs and what kind of production to expect.
